Coca-Cola Super Bowl Ad: Disgusting Hateful Reactions

Mon, February 3, 2014 11:25am EDT by 44 Comments 12,750 Article Views

Shockingly, Coca-Cola’s beautiful ad celebrating American diversity provoked a storm of haters tweeting that all the non-English speaking voices in the ad should ‘Speak American.’

Coca-Cola aired their new commercial during the Super Bowl, titled “It’s Beautiful,” but it brought out the ugly side of a disgusting number of prejudice commenters on Twitter. The ad was a celebration of American multiculturalism portraying citizens from all different backgrounds — races, ethnicities, skin colors — as well as the first gay family ever to be shown in a Super Bowl ad. Scenes of Americans from all different walks of life were caught on film while “America the Beautiful” was sung in several different languages. It was a touching and inspiring representation of America’s exclusiveness, but the reaction proved that there are still far too many ignorant people out there.

Coca-Cola’s Super Bowl Commercial

We’re completely shocked by the Twitter reaction from the Coke commercial. Not only did people start bashing the company for airing a commercial with different cultures singing in different languages. Then the hashtag “SpeakAmerican” began trending, showing that the people tweeting were not just ignorant but grammatically challenged, since you most Americans speak English, not American.

On a very positive note however, GLADD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) tweeted that this was the first commercial ever airing during the Super Bowl that featured a gay family. So, getting such a negative outpour was really just disgusting.

Watch the ad here, and then read the shocking tweets below.

The comments to this commercial are interesting to me as an immigrant and US citizen. People say “America the beautiful” should only be sung in English. They miss an important point: if immigrants sing this special song in their ‘other language’, they do so because they honor the country with all their heart. Our native tongue is the language of our hearts. If we sing “America is beautiful” in our language, we really mean it! We love this country. I love this country. I have learned English, but I still like to talk and sing in my native language. Why is everybody reading so much more into this commercial? This country is what it is because of its freedom and diversity. Why not celebrate it?

Today, I believe ‘English’ has evolved in to a form of ‘American’ through evolution or ‘Americanization; of the language based on culture, society, etc….Therefore, it is those who are being too technical and trying to make the ones who complained look like idiots who actually see a difference between our language being ENGLISH or American…But, I’d betcha a million to one, ask any ENGLISH speaking person from England and they would not call what we speak English! Haha..walk up to any American, offer them a lighter and ask to ‘Smoke a Fag?’ (Fags are Cigarettes in England!)
As for COCA-COLA…IDIOTS!! Basically, they tried to score ‘brownie points’ with every portion of the American Population by showing their ‘diversity’ and broad appeal to EVERYONE! Obviously, be it the Marketing firm who created the ad or Coke who approved it, they didn’t not check the viewing demographics of people watching the Super Bowl: on average 80% of all NFL/Super Bowl viewers are WHITE (54% male), 9% Hispanic, 11 % African-American…do the math! I don’t see ‘other’ listed!

I’d like to point out that the demographics that watch the superbowl aren’t such a big deal considering that superbowl commercials are something people who don’t watch football eagerly want to see because they are often quite creative, elaborate and new.

For example this superbowl was the first one I’d ever watched in my life (and it’s arguably the worst according to my football fan friends), but every year for many years before this one I’d always watched the ads.

I’m sure the ad will sell a lot of coke in Yugoslavia. Opps! I forgot. There is no more Yugoslavia because everyone there insisted on maintaining separate languages and cultures!

Yes, some of those people who tweeted are ignorant, but not all of them. Coke’s commercial came across to many as a slap in the face to American heritage. They took a song that is specific to America, where the main language of the land is English, and they sang it in the languages of other countries. Can you not see how that just might offend some people? That doesn’t mean these people hate people from other countries, or are racist, or that they hate other languages. It just means that some things are considered sacred. Many people take pride in their country and they don’t like it when someone pokes a stick in the eye of their country’s heritage. I understand what Coke was trying to do, but I don’t think they really though this one through very well.

I have to say I am extremely disappointed in how close minded people can be. It is a commercial can you please remember that. I do agree with that all in America should learn English to break down the communication barrier but not simply because we are in America. Almost everyone in this country has ancestors that came over from another country. Ireland, England, Germany, China, Japan, India, and plenty of others. It actually makes me really sad to see some of these comments on here. My grandfather who came from Norway, became a citizen (yes, he learned English but also spoke Norwegian), and fought for our country would probably be sadden by all these hateful comments. To some speaking another language is remembering your family heritage and those who sacrificed a lot to help the younger generations get where we are today. So to those who think that Coke is so wrong for that commercial, you have the right to have your own opinion but remember not everyone wants to hear it.

I seriously hope your kidding. considering you brutalized the people living in America before you and took their land, not to mention the fact the entire nation is made up of people from all of the world, to be so arrogant to presume that English is the only applicable language in America is Absurd. there is a reason USA is refereed to as a multicultural melting pot and not an ignorant homogeneous pot.

If you don’t want to learn English to live in America, then leave and go back to your own country. Us Americans are proud of our country. Some of us are bilingual but when we are home in America we speak like Americans and talk English. You want to live here, then be proud of this great nation and speak English or leave and go back where you came from. I am disappointed with Coke, but they can make any commercial they want and if people get offended, it is their right to feel any way they want. This is America, but please speak English and be proud to be here or go back to your own Country that you were so eager to leave because American is a great nation. Learn the language.

Im sure the American Indians that survived your colonization all had similar questions about why they were having to learn the language of foreigners and work on land suddenly ‘owned’ by someone else.

You seem to have published your liberal opinion and judged the twitter people a little too quickly and with some ignorance of your own. “This is America. We speak American” is a very popular quote from a very popular Will Ferrell movie. It seems more like a way for these people to show their displeasure while still keeping it light. Look in the mirror before you start calling everyone who doesn’t share you liberal views of this country ignorant. You preach acceptance, but what you mean is acceptance of your views, all the while showing no acceptance of other views. Who is ignorant? Get a new job.

I’m not offended by the commercial, but I do think people should all learn English to break down the communication barrier. If they want to continue to talk to each other in their own language, that is fine. But it’s hard to conduct business or have a conversation with someone who doesn’t know the same language. It’s just a practical thing to do, to have everyone speak the same language.

Last time I checked…this America, where people actually still have the freedom to speak their own minds. If you don’t agree, tough cookies. People have the RIGHT to either like, or dislike the commercial, AND to voice that opinion in public.

Coke would have been better off having their trademark song (I’d like to teach the world to sing) in different languages rather than America the beautiful.

GLADD can be disappointed in the reaction! Tough! It is disgusting to show two daddy’s with a child when there is already enough dysfunction in our American families today. But…. double the disgust putting a twist to a national song that has REAL meaning to most of us despite what people want to believe. Yes, we are a nation with people from all over the world and that is great. Even my ancestors came here from Ireland, England, and Germany. I believe Americans are open to new citizens as long as they come in legally! Not sneaking in! People proud to come in and be part of the USA and accepting the language. Instead of trying to change it to benefit themselves. Go to Italy and the language is Italian, France…..French, Mexico…..Spanish, China, Japan, and so on! Imagine taking a national song from one of these countries and take away the language putting a new twist to it as if to mock it instead of unifying it! This is the UNITED STATES of AMERICA and this pathetic commercial put more focus on foreigners instead of Americans! There is no way the American people can be unified with multiple different languages. Our ancestors learned English but continued to speak/teach their family language. My grandchildren (under 8) speak English and learning Spanish! For those that call us ignorant for being American proud…tough to you too! I’ve been drinking coca cola products too long! Pepsi I loved your tribute to the REAL heroes looking after our country……time for CHANGE! Pepsi anyone?

This is a logical fallacy of false equivalance, America has been and will always be a melting pot, a mixture of many of the worlds cultures, and in a sense it’s what’s made it such a great country. Italy and France and Italy and Spain and China are more or less homogenous countries that have long been that way.

Even in it’s earliest days America had french and spanish and english and irish and german and the natives living on it’s land.
