He’s baaaack! After two years, Larry Sanders made his to the NBA on March 13 after reportedly signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Basketball fans celebrated his comeback with — what else? – memes that included, of all people, Garry Shandling!
Larry Sanders, 28, hasn’t been seen on a NBA court since 2015, but the ex-Milwaukee Bucks star is reportedly kicking off his return in the Rock and Roll Capital of the world. Larry and the Cleveland Cavaliers reportedly worked out a deal to have him play again, according to ESPN. He’s likely expected to fill in for the injured Andrew Bogut, 32.
Fans that have been eagerly anticipating Larry’s return were psyched by the news, as well were fans of 1990s comedy. This is why: Larry Sanders happens to share the same name as the titular character of Garry Shandling’s The Larry Sanders Show. The sitcom won Garry critical acclaim and numerous awards. So, it made sense that fans would have fun using the late comedian’s image to celebrate the real Larry’s return to basketball.
Some photoshopped the late comedian into a Cavs uniform, while some thought that the late Captain America: The Winter Soldier actor would give his thumbs up to the deal. Garry was known to be a major basketball fan, holding weekly games at his home. Though, as a Chicago native (who lived in Los Angeles) maybe he rooted for the Chicago Bulls or Los Angeles Lakers?
The real Larry Sanders was averaging 6.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game, according to Bleacher Report. However, a series of injuries and high-profile suspensions over marijuana use plagued his career. He left the league at the end of the 2015 season, checking himself into a hospital for anxiety and depression.
Larry announced he was going to try and get back to the NBA on Jan. 26, saying he was “officially stepping back into the game, looking for a good fit but it shouldn’t long now. I really missed the game. I think it missed me [too.]” Larry will reportedly play for the Cav’s D-League team for the majority of the regular season, working off the rust in time for the playoffs.
What do you think about Larry returning to the NBA, HollywoodLifers? Do you think he’ll help the Cavs win back-to-back championships?
