James Franco’s Instagram Scandal: A Hoax To Promote New Film?

Thu, April 3, 2014 12:37pm EDT by 71 Comments

On April 1, two major things happened for James Franco — the official trailer for his new film ‘Palo Alto’ hit the web and he was accused of hitting on a girl half his age in NYC. In the film, Franco’s character is an older coach seducing a young girl. Is it ironic that these things happened on the same day?

Could James Franco be the ultimate prankster? The same day that he was allegedly hitting on a 17-year-old fan in New York, the trailer for his new movie Palo Alto hit the web. So, could it be that the incident with the young teen is just to promote the film that he plays a teacher seducing a student?

James Franco’s Instagram Scandal: A Hoax For Publicity?

On April 1, Lucy Clode, 17, met James, 35, outside his Broadway show Of Mice & Men and filmed an Instagram video. He asked her to tag him in it on Instagram, which she did and then — according to leaked screen grabs — he messaged her.

UPDATE: James Franco Confesses Why He Hit On 17-Year-Old Girl

In the messages, he asked her how old she was, what hotel she was staying at, and for her phone number. She apparently gave it, because more screen grabs showed iMessages, showing him sending two separate pictures to prove it was actually him — including one of him holding a sign up with her name on it.

Lucy Clode: See Pics Of James Franco’s 17-Year-Old Crush

There’s no proof these messages are real, but after a little research we discovered that not only was April 1 the day of the apparent tweets, but also the date James’ new movie trailer was released.

Kanye West Begging James Franco & Seth Rogen To Do ‘Bound 2′ Sequel

Palo Alto, a film based on James’ 2010 book of short stories, is a high school drama about a forbidden romance that develops between single father (James), who coaches a high school soccer team and a young student, (Emma Roberts).

In the trailer, which you can watch above, we see them get hot and heavy (and almost naked). Since James is known for being quite the prankster, could it be that he created the whole young-girl-in-NYC scenario just to promote the film?

What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Is it a hoax? Does the movie look good? Let us know!

James Franco has never been accused of this sort of behaviour before, he comes across as a pretty smart/cool guy and i’m sure he wouldn’t struggle to fill his bed, how can you think its a co-incidence this happens in line with the release of the trailer of the film he not only stars in but wrote the book the film is based on. This is an indie film, it has a released date in the US but not the UK yet, he messages a girl in the UK and now this has become news, i myself have only seen the trailer from the attention this has received, i think it looks good and hope it gets a uk release, he’s not a weirdo, he’s been very clever and got this indie film the attention it needs to be a success.

The idea that “popular” men who “have no problem getting laid” dont prey on women has been disproven over and over and over again. How many rich and powerful celebrities and sports stars have to be accused and convicted of sexual misconduct before you understand this?

Its not just “creepy weirdos” who prey on women. In fact, its the more confident men who think theyre gods gift to women who are MORE likely to engage in sexual malfeasance.

People used to get MARRIED younger than 17. Who cares? I mean really if this was a 17 yr old guy with a 35 yr old woman he’d receive congratulatory slaps on the back. What is the age of consent? If it was legal then I don’t see what difference any of this makes.

A 35 year old woman having sex with a 17 year old boy is statutory rape, and illegal.

That is only if the age of consent is above 17. It is 16 where I’m from so it wouldn’t be. Someone also stated it is 17 in New York? I don’t know if that is true though?

Not in New York state is isn’t, you ignoramus. The legal age of consent in New York is 17. So regardless of the sex of the older party, there is no violation of the law.

When I was 17, a senior in high school my boyfriend was 25. He was enlisted in the Navy. My parents gave their consent for the simple reason they wanted to know where I was at and with whom I was spending my time. Had they forbidden me to see him, I’d still have found a way. Now, with all that having been said. He was a creep, he did use me and when he was done he left. I was wiser for the experience….and never made that mistake again. He was an immature guy and extremely insecure and in order to have the upper hand and the power in the relationship he chased (perpetually) younger women. It was a pattern he followed WELL into his thirties. I don’t think Franco would risk the collateral damage that a scandal like this would cause (Think Courtney Stoddard and her creeper husband, ok?) and he is noted for his really *quirky* sense of humor. I do believe this is a really goofy attempt at some free publicity. He’s a smart man, he knows the death blow this could deal to his career and I think most of the readership here are blowing this all out of proportion. And if she’s old enough to consent, and he was serious…it’s none of our business now is it? She has to make her own way in the world…and learn the lessons that life will dish out (whether it’s him or someone else who teaches her…)

What did he do that’s stupid? Hit on a legally available girl? The age of consent is 17 in New York(and the girl is visiting from Scotland where the age of consent is 16). He didn’t do anything wrong or stupid. What’s stupid is that this is even a “news” story.
