Yikes! Miss Puerto Rico, Destiny Velez, went on a major Twitter rant slamming the Muslim community that resulted in an indefinite suspension by the Miss America Organization. See what she said here!
Destiny Velez, who represented her country as Miss Puerto Rico in this year’s Miss America competition, may have ended her pageant career with a few short tweets. After director Michael Moore posted a picture with the statement, “We Are All Muslim,” Destiny took to Twitter to express her disgust with the pic and bluntly accuse Muslims of terrorizing the United States. Not surprisingly, this didn’t fly with the Miss America Organization, and she has been indefinitely suspended. Get more details below.
In the wake of Donald Trump‘s call to ban all Muslims from entering the country, Michael shared his pic advocating for Muslims, but Destiny was apparently not happy about it. She decided to take her opinions to social media in a rant starting with, “Islamic god is NOT the same God of the Christians & the Jews.” As she continued, Destiny boldly stated, “Muslims use our constitution to terrorize USA & plant gas stations,” but didn’t stop there. “There’s NO comparison between Jews, Christians & Muslims. Jews nor Christians have terrorizing agendas in their sacred books,” she wrote. “All what Muslims have done is provided oil & terrorize this country & many others!!!!!!”
Destiny’s rant immediately resulted in major backlash, as she didn’t just offend the Muslim community. People from her native country were even calling her out with the hashtag “nonosrepresentas, which means “you don’t represent us.” But once the official Miss America Organization caught wind of Destiny’s tweets, everything really went downhill for Miss Puerto Rico.
In a statement issued Dec. 19, the Miss America Organization declared that Destiny was suspended indefinitely, as her words “do not represent the integrity and esteem of our program, nor that of our board members, our sponsors and partners, or the National Organization.”
Although the damage has already been done for Destiny and she won’t be able to compete indefinitely, Miss Puerto Rico owned up to her actions. “I apologize to the people I have offended with my words,” she said in an apology statement. “I am first and foremost an #UpStander and as such I stand up against bullying. The last thing I wanted to do was to bully anyone. Again, I apologize to anyone who felt offended with my words.”
Destiny has since deleted her social media accounts. Who knows if we’ll be seeing her compete again, but it’s definitely clear that she regrets her rant.
