Happy Earth Day! Hollywood’s greenest celebs are celebrating today, April 22, and letting the world know how much they love this big blue planet we call our home. Check out their best tweets!
For some of the industry’s most powerful celebrities, influence isn’t just about what they’re wearing; it’s about making a difference to the larger world. And what better time to let people know that environmentalism is their cause of choice than on Earth Day? The greenest of the green took to Twitter on April 22nd to let their voices be heard.
Earth Day — What The Stars Are Tweeting
It’s the 45th anniversary of Earth Day, and the greenest and savviest celebs are taking note of the important date. Created in 1970, the first Earth Day came about after years of pollution and unsafe environmental practices prompted a call for change. People took to the streets, and Republicans and Democrats united (seriously!) to form the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as pass the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts.
Talk about progress!
Now, 45 years later, we’re still far from a world that’s completely environmentally sound. Climate change threatens our ecosystem daily, but many, including passionate celebrities, are fighting for reforms. To mark Earth Day 2015, take these tweets from noted actors and environmentalists like Leonardo DiCaprio, 40 and Mark Ruffalo, 47. While Leo has been retweeting up a storm from various charities, Mark took a moment to write a personal message before doing the same.
“Wish the media would talk about climate change and conservation like it was #EarthDayEveryDay,” Leo retweeted from @Sik_One48
Happy #EarthDay all living systems of this beautiful, spinning, nearly impossible, blue shining sphere.
— Mark Ruffalo (@MarkRuffalo) April 22, 2015
The two actors have busy schedules even when they’re not making movies. Mark is an outspoken opponent of fracking, and has called upon President Obama to make the United States the renewable energy capital of the world. Leo, when not busy wooing Rihanna, 27, is the founder and leader of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. The organization aims to protect the last wild places on Earth and ensure that humans and wildlife can live together in harmony. Big goals!
Or socially-concious designer Stella McCartney, 43, who certainly got her love for Mother Earth from father Paul McCartney, 72. Not only has she themed her Tumblr page for the day, but has a helpful message for Climate Change deniers over on Twitter. Supermodel Gisele Bündchen, 34, took a bit of a different approach, tweeting a link to a very expressive Instagram that sums up her feelings about the day.
Today is Earth Day! Let's love, honor and take care of our beautiful Mother Earth. We are One. Our well being depends on how we take care of our planet. This is our home, the only one we have. #DiadaTerra
Rap Royalty is in on the holiday too. Russell Simmons, 57, is an avid supporter of animal rights, supporting PETA and the ASPCA to bring awareness to the plight of animal cruelty and neglect. Who knew he was such a renaissance man?

Of course, the day wouldn’t be complete without a little bit of advice from a famously vegan and animal-loving funny woman, Ellen Degeneres, 57. It’s a special day, so of course you have to celebrate properly.
It’s #EarthDay! Take a minute to appreciate the world around you. Pet a squirrel. Scatter sunflower seeds around your home. Wash a tree.

We can all learn a thing or two from these environmentally-conscious celebs. Get out there and do something great for your planet!
