George Takei

Bio:
George Takei (born Hosato Takei on April 20, 1937 in Los Angeles, California) is an American actor, director, author and activist. George was born to Japanese-American parents. In 1942, he and his family were sent to the Japanese internment camp in Tule Lake, California. He returned to Los Angeles at the end of World War II. After graduating high school, George enrolled in the University of California at Berkley and UCLA, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Theater in 1960 and a Master’s in 1964. He began acting in the 1950s and struggled to find work in a time when Asians were rarely cast. He appeared in movies Never So Few, Hell To Eternity and Walk, Don’t Run but his breakout came in television. In 1965, he was cast as Lt. Sulu in the original Star Trek series. After Star Trek, George ran for City Council of Los Angeles. He came in second. He acted in multiple Star Trek movies, as well as Return From The River Kwai, Oblivion and voicing a character in Disney’s Mulan. George became a beloved guest on the Howard Stern show starting in the 1990s and has become famous for his deep voice and “Oh My” catch phrase. In 2015, George turned his life in the Interment camps into theatrical musical. Allegiance. He also starred in it and the show made its Broadway debut in November of that year.

Personal Life:
In 2005, George revealed that he is gay and had been in a committed relationship with his partner, Brad Altman, for 18 years. He currently serves as a spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, “Coming Out Project.” He has been an outspoken activist for gay rights across the world. George had a noted feud with William Shatner from their original Star Trek days, but seemed to patch things up in 2006
