Burger King is buying Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen for $1.8 billion, as it was announced on Feb. 21, and a misleading Twitter trend had fans freaking. Customers thought that Popeyes was offering a new deal for $1.80 — and you can bet they were disappointed when they discovered this is not the case.
Restaurant Brands International, which owns Burger King and Tim Hortons, is buying Popeyes, and when fans saw the “$1.8″ amount in headlines, they mistook it for a”whopper” of a deal (sorry) on food at the restaurant. Whoops! “No lie, I looked at that trending topic like Popeyes was offering a deal for $1.80…” @VinceValholla tweeted. “Damn I’m thinking “Popeyes for $1.8″ hashtag was a combo for $1.80 smh,” @GladiatorGuru21 echoed. We feel you!

Others weren’t fooled, but still had plenty to say about the transaction. “Smh the Owner of Burger King bought Popeyes for $1.8 Billion. He could have just got the 3 piece combo for $7.19, what a ripoff,” @MicahTrauger joked. “I don’t trust burger king buying popeyes , burger king had cheeto chicken fries,” another fan declared. Yep, they need to think about these things! Too good.
Sorry, all — the new deal is just business as usual. “Popeyes is a powerful brand with a rich Louisiana heritage that resonates with guests around the world,” Restaurant Brands International CEO Daniel Schwartz said in a statement. “With this transaction, RBI is adding a brand that has a distinctive position within a compelling segment and strong US and international prospects for growth.” Snore.
