Karlie Hay used some inappropriate language on Twitter in 2013 and 2014, and now that she’s been crowned Miss Teen USA, the messages, featuring the ‘N-word,’ have resurfaced. And while the 18-year-old has addressed the situation…she hasn’t exactly apologized. See her response here!
Karlie Hay’s old Twitter account has now been made private, but not before screen grabs of her offensive messages to friends were taken! In multiple tweets, the Miss Teen USA winner uses the “N-word” and aggressive tone, and it’s pretty disturbing — especially knowing she was just 15 and 16 at the times they were written.
“Several years ago, I had many personal struggles and found myself in a place that is not representative of who I am as a person,” she explained, after the tweets came out. “I admit that I have used language publicly in the past which I am not proud of and that there is no excuse for. Through hard work, education and thanks in large part to the sisterhood that I have come to know through pageants, I am proud to say that I am today a better person. I am honored to hold this title and I will use this platform to promote the values of The Miss Universe Organization, and my own, that recognize the confidence, beauty and perseverance of all women.”
Obviously, this is a nice message, and it’s great that Karlie addressed the situation as soon as she could, but isn’t it kind of shocking that she never once actually apologized for her actions?!
Karlie was crowned Miss Teen USA on July 30, blowing the judges away in the evening gown, activewear and personality portions of the competition. Hopefully this really was a great learning experience for her!
HollywoodLifers, are you shocked by Karlie’s old tweets? Do you think her explanation was okay, or should she have apologized more?
