Uh-oh! NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is in HOT water with some of his fans for refusing to stand for the National Anthem during a preseason game! And while Colin was protesting for the Black Lives Matter movement, many people are NOT ok with it and are absolutely furious over his lack of patriotism. See the vicious tweets here.
Forty Niners quarterback Colin Kaepernick, 28, willingly and knowingly immersed himself into controversy on Aug. 26 when he once again — he’s done this at least one other time during a preseason game — refused to stand for the playing of the national anthem. Colin’s strange and unpatriotic behavior was done in protest of what he believes are wrongdoings against African Americans and minorities in the United States.
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color,” Colin told NFL Media in an interview after their 49ers preseason loss to the Green Bay Packers. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
And while a lot of fans are totally on board with the Black Lives Matter movement, many also felt that it was extremely inappropriate to protest by not standing for the National Anthem. See what Twitter users across the country had to say about Colin’s actions below:

As if I didn’t need any more reason to think #ColinKaepernick was a POS. You need to find a better way to protest than disrespecting USA

But seriously @Kaepernick7, if you don’t want to respect the US flag, go find another country that’ll pay you millions to be bad at your job

Obviously people are angry over Colin’s refusal to honor America, which led the 49ers to issue a statement of their own. “The national anthem is and always will be a special part of the pre-game ceremony. It is an opportunity to honor our country and reflect on the great liberties we are afforded as its citizens,” it read.
“In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose and participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem.” So apparently the NFL is backing Colin up!
But not standing during the National Anthem is not the only statement Colin made on Friday night. He also showed up to his media sessions wearing a Malcolm X cap. But are we really surprised? Not really. After all, the athlete’s social media accounts have been a clear indicator that he’s pro-black and anti-police brutality — and he has been for some time. Hopefully he doesn’t lose TOO many fans over this controversy!
