A Day Without A Woman: Why You Need To Fight For Reproductive Rights Now

Wed, March 8, 2017 5:18pm EDT by Bonnie Fuller 2 Comments

Donald Trump got blasted this morning for tweeting his support for women on International Women’s Day, precisely because his administration is doing its utmost to promote policies which hurt women and especially their health/ That’s why you need to stand up for women today and every day.

Donald Trump, how dare you tweet that you have “tremendous respect for women and the many roles they serve that are vital to the fabric of our society and our economy” today, March 8. when you and your Republican Congress are doing everything in your power to take away healthcare for women. The new Republican-sponsored American Healthcare Act that would repeal and replace Obamacare would defund Planned Parenthood, which provides health services to over 2 and a half million women every year. Over their lifetime, one in five American women will visit a Planned Parenthood clinic to get healthcare. In many parts of the country, Planned Parenthood clinics are the only place that women can get affordable mammograms, pap smears, check ups and birth control counseling.

Nevertheless, Donald Trump and his Republican party will withdraw Planned Parenthood’s $500 million in federal funding when they pass their new healthcare plan. On top of that, they are setting up a series of tax credits for health insurance that will effectively make it impossible for you and every other women to get health insurance which will cover the cost of an abortion. Therefore, any woman who wants or needs an abortion will have to cover the cost — anywhere from a few hundred dollars for a very early abortion to tens of thousands of dollars for a  middle trimester abortion — our of their own pockets.

Just to be clear, middle and later term abortions are sometimes medically necessary because a fetus is not viable and/or because the mother’s health or even life is endangered by the pregnancy. Also, to be clear, there is no other medical procedure targeted or other healthcare provider targeted for defunding in the GOP replacement for Obamacare.

Planned Parenthood is being threatened by Donald Trump and the Republicans because yes, they do provide abortion counseling as part of their full range of medical services for women and they do perform some abortions, although the abortion procedures are NOT paid for with any government funds. Abortions are a tiny per centage of the medical services that they provide.

Donald Trump even told The New York Times that if the organization stopped performing abortions, then the $500 million in funding necessary to keep Planned Parenthood’s clinics open would be maintained by Congress. In other words, even though abortion is the legal law of the land, Donald Trump and the Republicans will make abortions almost impossible to get, unless you happen to be very wealthy. There simply won’t be any clinics to many parts of the country to get the procedure if Planned Parenthood is defunded AND you won’t be able to have your health insurance cover the cost, no matter where you live.

“It’s definitely a war on women’s healthcare,” Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood, told CBS This Morning, today. “Women in this country need us for affordable high quality care… for many women, we’re their only doctor. We provide access to safe and legal abortion and we simply won’t turn our backs on American women.”

No, they won’t. But, Donald Trump and the Republican Congress will and that’s why you need to stand up for your rights and the rights of other women, just like the protesters who turned out for women’s marches today. “I’m most concerned about reproductive rights. I feel that it’s nobody’s place to tell me how I need to run my own body,” Sarah Finkelstein, 26, told HollywoodLife.com at the NYC protest.

Piper and Noor, two young women who are students at NYC’s Parson’s School of Design, were at the protest carrying bloody-looking hangers to make the point that women were forced to resort to life-threatening abortion measures, before the procedure was safe and legal. We don’t need to go back to those dangerous, bloody hanger days.

Plus, Donald Trump does not support equal pay for equal work for women, he is already breaking up families by deporting undocumented mothers and fathers, who are not criminals, and he has yet to propose a paid family leave plan that would be of huge benefit for women. That’s why so many women slammed Trump for his hypocritical tweet about International Women’s Day today. He deserved it. Do you agree Hollywoodlifers? Let me know.
