Next time Rory McIlroy gets an invitation to join President Donald Trump for a round of golf, he may want to say ‘no.’ After the PGA superstar played 18 holes with the man behind the divisive ‘Muslim Ban,’ many ‘disappointed’ fans dragged Rory for golfing with ‘the orange baboon!’
Rory McIlroy, 27, joined President Donald Trump, 70, for 18 holes at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida on Feb. 19, according to No Laying Up. Donald reached out to Rory the night before and after playing 18 holes with the leader of the free world, Rory was impressed with what he saw.
“[Donald] probably shot around 80,” he said. “He’s a decent player for a guy in his 70’s.” A picture showed Rory, Donald, ClearSports CEO Garry Singer and former New York Yankees star Paul O’Neill posing together on the green, but Rory later said that their foursome was rounded out by Nick Mullen from ISM and Rich Levine, a friend of Trump’s.
Of course, what most fans fixated on was that Rory, an Irish golfer, was hanging out with a man who’s “extreme vetting” travel ban would ultimately exclude him from the country. “Tell him you’re a refugee from a country renowned for terrorism,” one fan tweeted at Rory, noting that Ireland’s history with “The Troubles” (aka the conflict in Northern Ireland between UK loyalists and Irish nationalists.)
Rory got a lot of heat from fans that saw him golfing with Donald as a slap in a face. Some pointed out that he refused to play in the 2016 Rio Olympics, but had no issue “teeing with tyrants.” Many wondered why he would spend his time rehabbing from a stress fracture in his rib by golfing with a divisive figure. Others just said that Rory’s choice of golfing partners made them lose respect for him.
There were plenty of fans that didn’t see a big deal with Rory golfing with the American president, but there were plenty of people upset with his choice. “The problem is that Rory is a beloved figure, probably the most beloved figure in his sport,” Lawrence Donegan, a golfing columnist, said of this golfing outing, according to For The Win. “He is apparently appealing to a younger audience, he is very vocal about appealing to a younger audience. [Golfing with Trump] basically reinforces old stereotypes.”
What do you think about Rory golfing with Donald, HollywoodLifers? Is it a big deal or do you think Rory did nothing wrong?
