Punxsutawney Phil is the groundhog that is celebrated every February 2 in America as the holiday, Groundhog’s Day. The ceremony begins before sunrise, and when Phil emerges from his underground home on Gobbler’s Knob the townspeople watch carefully to see whether or not he sees his own shadow. If he does see his shadow, tradition says that he is predicting that there will be at least six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t see his shadow, that means spring will be coming early. This tradition has taken place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania since 1887.
