Theo James (born Theodore Peter James Kinnaird Taptiklis in Oxford, United Kingdom on December 16, 1984) is an English actor. He made his television debut in A Passionate Woman but soon after played Kemal Pamuk in an episode of the first season of Downton Abbey. He then began starring in Bedlam, playing the lead role of Jed Harper. In 2012 he appeared in the adaption of John Braine‘s Room at the Top as Jack Wales. As far as his film career goes, Theo has been in You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, The Domino Effect, and The Inbetweeners Movie. In 2011, James was chosen to play the character of David in the fourth installment of Underworld: Awakening, released in 2012. That same year, he appeared in ITV’s Case Sensitive. Theo’s breakout role was playing the lead man, Tobias “Four” Eaton in the film adaptation of Veronica Roth‘s best-selling book, Divergent (2014). Theo reprised his role for the remaining four Divergent films, one of which is scheduled for release in 2017. Theo is also set to star in an indie drama called Franny, alongside Richard Gere and Dakota Fanning. He will reprise his character David in the fifth Underworld film as well, this time as the film’s lead.

Theo James is the youngest of five children. He has two brothers and two sisters. He earned his undergraduate degree in philosophy from the University of Nottingham and trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School after college. Theo’s ancestry is Greek, English, and Scottish. He has been dating actress Ruth Kearney since 2009.
