Maggie Smith (born Margaret Natalie Smith in Ilford, United Kingdom, on December 28, 1934), is an English film, television, and stage actress. Despite having a career spanning over 60 years, she is known across the world as Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter series and as the Dowager Countess of Grantham on the television series Downton Abbey. She has been nominated for six Oscars and won two for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and California Suite. Maggie was appointed a Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1990.

Personal Life:
Maggie Smith married actor Robert Stephens in 1967 and had two sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens. Maggie divorced Robert in 1974. She re-married to playwright Beverley Cross in 1975; he died in 1998. Maggie was diagnosed with Graves disease in 1988 and breast cancer in 2008.
