Britney Spears, 41, had a message for her fans days before the release of her highly-anticipated memoir, The Woman in Me. The “Criminal” singer returned to Instagram on October 22 less than 24 hours after she deactivated her account and posted a picture of a heart-shaped cake with pink candles and the words “See you in hell” written in pink. Britney included two nail polish emojis in her caption but offered no further context to her cryptic post. She also turned the comments off to stop fans from chiming in.

Britney’s tell-all book that comes out October 24 has already been making headlines thanks to excerpts that revealed some of what she wrote about, including her relationship with Justin Timberlake that allegedly involved a secret abortion. Britney also detailed her brief fling with Colin Farrell, kissing Madonna at the 2003 VMAs, drinking alcohol with her mom Lynne Spears before she was of age, and the abusive conservatorship that she was under for 13 years in her book.

After Britney saw the headlines about her book, she shared a message on Instagram on October 20 and clarified that the purpose of her memoir isn’t to “offend” people. “That was me then…that is in the past !!!! I don’t like the headlines I am readying … that’s exactly why I quit the business 4 years ago !!!” the Crossroads star said. “Most of the book is from 20 years ago …. I have moved on and it’s a beautiful clean slate from here !!!”

The “Everytime” singer also told her fans that writing her book has helped give her “closure” from everything that she’s gone through in her career and with her family. “Hopefully I can enlighten people who feel particularly alone in most cases or hurt or misunderstood !!!!” she said. “Again, my motive for this book was not meant to harp on my past experiences. which is what the press is doing and it’s dumb and silly !!!! I have moved on since then !!!!”

Britney announced her memoir in July 2023, telling fans on social media, “It’s coming…My story on my own terms at last. Are you ready?” She first teased a tell-all in Oct. 2021, one month before she was freed from her conservatorship. “I’ll just be honest and say I’ve waited so long to be free from the situation I’m in … Lord have mercy on my family’s souls if I ever do an interview!!!” she wrote on Instagram at the time. Britney reportedly landed the book deal for $15 million to share intimate details about her life.
