Thomas made his TV debut in a guest role on Leg Work in 1987. He also had roles on As The World Turns and Another World. Thomas made his big screen debut in Far & Away, alongside Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Before nabbing roles on Dharma & Greg and Criminal Minds, he starred on Chicago Hope from 1994 to 1998. Thomas was fired from Criminal Minds before the show’s twelfth season. Thomas allegedly kicked a writer-producer during an on-set altercation.
