ORIGINAL STORY: While Nancy Pelosi may have an extensive career in the spotlight given her status of Speaker of the House, her husband, Paul Pelosi has mostly managed to keep his life private. Unfortunately, the House Speaker’s husband was the victim of an attack at their home in San Francisco on Friday, October 28. A spokesperson for Pelosi released a statement, saying that Paul was hospitalized following the attack. Police sources revealed the attacker shouted, “Where is Nancy?” to CNN.

San Francisco Police released a statement detailing what had happened during the attack on Monday, October 31. SFPD said that they saw both Paul Pelosi and the suspect, who was identified as David DePape, both holding a hammer in the statement, which was obtained by HollywoodLife. “Moments later the suspect gained control of the hammer and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi with it. Officers immediately tackled the suspect and disarmed him. The officers requested emergency back-up, requested parademics to the scene and began rendering medical aid to Mr. Pelosi,” they said. “Mr. Pelosi and Mr. DePape were then transported to a local hospital for treatment.”

Nancy took to her Twitter the day after the attack and shared a heartbreaking message about how she and her family are dealing with the aftermath of the home invasion. “Our children, our grandchildren and I are heartbroken and traumatized by the life-threatening attack on our Pop,” she wrote. Nancy then went on to say Paul is “continuing to recover,” and thanked law enforcement and emergency services for their speedy response.

Sources familiar with the attack also told the outlet that the attacker attempted to tie Paul up “until Nancy got home,” and when police arrived on the scene, he told them he was “waiting for Nancy.” CNN‘s sources also said Paul was able to call 911 despite the tie-up attempt. Police revealed that zip ties were found at the scene, and they revealed that Paul and David were the only ones in the house at the time of the attack, per NBC News. The attacker has since been brought into custody. A hospital source said that Paul was undergoing brain surgery, according to NBC News. Per CNN, a source said Nancy spoke to her husband following the violent hammer attack, prior to his surgery. She’s reportedly traveling back to San Francisco in order to be by her husband’s side.

Pelosi’s office thanked those who helped her husband in the statement. “Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi.  The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation.  Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery,” they said. “The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time.”

In a press conference after the attack, police revealed that they were still investigating the motives, but named the suspect as David DePape42. Police Chief William Scott said that both Paul Pelosi and DePape were holding a hammer when police arrived. He said that DePape proceeded to “violently assault” him with the hammer, and he was tackled and apprehended by police. DePape was booked on attempted homicide, first-degree burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery with serious bodily injury, elder abuse, inflict great bodily injury on elderly, dissuading a victim, damaging or preventing a communication for an emergency call, threatening a public official or family member, and violent felony enhancement.

After the attack, many politicians from both sides of the aisle condemned the attack and wished Paul well. Senators Chuck Schumer (NY-D) and Mitch McConnell (KY-R) both took to Twitter to call out the attack. “What happened to Paul Pelosi was a dastardly act. I spoke with Speaker Pelosi earlier this morning and conveyed my deepest concern and heartfelt wishes to her husband and their family, and I wish him a speedy recovery,” Schumer wrote.

McConnell also shared his outrage. “Horrified and disgusted by the reports that Paul Pelosi was assaulted in his and Speaker Pelosi’s home last night. Grateful to hear that Paul is on track to make a full recovery and that law enforcement including our stellar Capitol Police are on the case,” he tweeted.

Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre released a statement saying that President Joe Biden had spoken to the House Speaker and sent his best wishes. “The President is praying for Paul Pelosi and for Speaker Pelosi’s whole family. This morning he called Speaker Pelosi to express his support after this horrible attack. He is also very glad that a full recovery is expected. The President continues to condemn all violence, and asks that the family’s desire for privacy be respected,” she said in a statement.

This wasn’t the only recent news surrounding the House Speaker’s husband this year. It was revealed on May 29 that he was arrested the previous night in Napa Valley for driving under the influence, sparking much controversy and bringing his name to the public. Despite the unfortunate incident, Paul has managed to make an impressive name for himself. Here are five things to know about Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi.

He Is Highly Educated

The San Francisco native was born on April 15, 1940, currently making him 82 years old, according to TMZ. He attended the prestigious Georgetown University in Washington DC, via The Washington Post. There, he met his future wife, who was attending Trinity College at the time, according to The Baltimore Sun. Paul has been serving on the board of advisors for the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service since 2009. He also has a Masters of Business Administration from New York University, according to The Seattle Times.

He Found Success In Business

Clearly, Paul’s MBA got him far in life. Although his wife is known for her prolific political career, Paul took a different, albeit no less successful route in the world of business. He is the current owner of Financial Leasing Services, which is a venture capital company, according to The New York Times. “He understands politics, but he is not particularly political,” Nancy told The Los Angeles Times. “He’s a businessman,” she added.

He Is An Avid Football Fan

When it comes to his passions, Paul has invested in the dynamic world of sports as well. He was the owner of the football team, The Sacramento Mountain Lions, which existed from 2009 to 2012 before becoming defunct. He reportedly paid a whopping 12 million dollars for the team, who eventually sued him in 2013 after claiming he failed to pay a whopping $250,000, according to KCRA-3.

He Respects His Wife’s Career

Nancy and Paul married in 1963, and the businessman has since done all he can to support his wife’s political endeavors. During their marriage, he has kept a low profile and stayed in his lane when it comes to Nancy’s career, especially regarding his own business decisions.

“I think I have a good radar in terms of what kind of business investments would be inappropriate for me given her position,” he told The Los Angeles Times in 2009. “I’ve religiously steered away from anything that would look controversial to her position.” In a 2004 interview, he also added: “I’ve made a conscious effort to not be involved or give the appearance of being involved in her political career,” per The San Francisco Chronicle.

He Has Five Children

Nancy and Paul’s nearly sixty-year marriage has resulted in a large number of offspring. They share five children together, named Alexandra, Paul Jr, Christine, Nancy Corinne, and Jacqueline. Alexandra is a critically acclaimed documentary filmmaker and journalist, who spoke to HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY about her 2020 project, The American Selfie: One Nation Shoots Itself. Meanwhile, Paul Jr followed after his father’s footsteps, and is currently a business analyst and real estate broker. Christine took after her mother’s political career choices, and is serving in The California Democratic Women’s Caucus.

While little is known about Nancy Corinne or Jacqueline, it is reported that eldest Nancy married a businessman named Theodore Prowda. However, Jacqueline took the artistic route with her life, as she owns and teaches at an art studio.
