Nina Davuluri is best known for winning the title of Miss America 2014 on Sept. 15, 2013. She is the first Indian-American winner of the pageant, where Bollywood-style dancing was her talent. Her parents are both from India, and her father is a gynecologist. She wishes to be a doctor as well. She received racist backlash from winning the title, with people inferring that an Indian woman isn’t a true representation of America, but responded to hateful messages by saying, “I have to rise above that. I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.”
Nina Davuluri went to the University of Michigan to study Brain Behavior and Cognitive Science and was on the Dean’s List. She also won a Michigan Merit Award and National Honor Society Award.
