Sir Ian McKellen (born Ian Murray McKellen on May 25, 1939) is an English actor. His most notable movie roles include Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies and Magneto in the X-Men films. Ian was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1979 for his work in drama. Ian has had a long career in film. He got his start in theater before moving on to film. Over the course of his career, his has won six Laurence Olivier Awards, a Tony Award, a Golden Globe Award and two Critics’ Choice Awards. He’s also been nominated for two Academy Awards, four BAFTAs and five Emmy Awards.
