Ruth Bader Ginsburg (born Ruth Joan Bader on March 15, 1933 in New York City, New York) is an Associated Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. She was appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993. She is the second female justice and is currently one of three other female justices. Before her appointment, Ruth was a volunteer lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union and used her legal career to promote the advancement of women’s rights. She is a notable liberal member of the court.

Personal Life:
Ruth graduated from Cornell and a few days later, married Martin D. Ginsburg, a tax lawyer and professor of law at Georgetown Law Center. The couple has two children, Jane Ginsburg– a professor at Columbia- and James Ginsburg– founder of Cedille Records. Martin died of complications from metastic cancer in 2010. Ruth was raised Jewish, but became non-observant following experience with the religion’s close-mindedness towards women. She was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1999 and went through chemo and radiation. In 2009, she underwent surgery related to pancreatic cancer and in 2014 had a stent placed in her right coronary artery after having discomfort while exercising.
