Dylann Roof (born Dylann Storm Roof in April 1994, from Lexington, South Carolina) is the man convicted in the 2015 Charleston, South Carolina shooting. Dylan attended White Knoll High School. He was described as a soft-spoken man, but was known to be “kind of wild,” with a high school friend saying that he was heavily involved in drugs. Dylann reportedly made racist jokes growing up, but friends never took anything he said seriously. He was reportedly arrested on March 2015 for possession of a controlled substance. Additionally, he was reportedly given a .45 pistol for his birthday from his father. A Facebook photo of Dylann showed him wearing a jacket with the flags of South Africa and Rhodesia, two countries known for apartheid and white-rule. He also reportedly had vanity plates on his car that proudly displayed the Confederate flag.

Personal Life:
Dylann reportedly joined the June 17 bible study in the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. During the meeting, Dylan waited in the back before standing up and opening fire. He reportedly told the survivor of the shooting that he “[had] to do it. You’re raping our women and taking over the country. You have to go.” One of Dylann’s alleged nine victims was Rev. Clementa Pinckney, the pastor for the church and South Carolina state senator. Dylann reportedly fled the scene in a black Hyundai Elantra, and was apprehended by South Carolina police on June 18, 2015. He was found guilty on 33 counts on Dec. 15.
