Brendan Dassey (Brendan Ray Dassey on October 19, 1989 in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin) was convicted of being party to first-degree murder of photographer Teresa Halbach, second-degree sexual assault and mutilation of a corpse. He was sentenced to life in prison, but the Netflix documentary series Making a Murderer analyzed the investigation and revealed that Dassey’s confession was involuntary. US Magistrate Judge William E. Duffin overturned the conviction in August 2016, and Dassey was ordered to be released on Nov. 14, 2016.
Dassey is best known for having his story told via Making a Murderer.
He has three brothers: Bryan, Bobby, and Blaine, and a half-brother, Brad. Dassey’s uncle, Steven Avery, was also convicted. Making a Murderer examines the prosecution and trials of Avery and Dassey, who was seventeen at the time of being convicted.
