Adnan Syed was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, in Baltimore, Maryland in 1999. Her death was the subject of the super popular podcast, Serial, in 2014. He is currently serving a life sentence plus 30 years, in a western Maryland state prison, but on June 30, 2016, he was granted a new trial.

They reportedly became friends at some point during the spring of 1998, and began a romantic relationship soon thereafter, according to TheNational. Adnan’s been serving a life sentence plus 30 years since being convicted of first-degree murder on Feb. 25, 2000. For the last 15 years, he has maintained his innocence. He was a student at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore County.
