Michael Sam (born Michael Alan Sam, Jr. on January 7, 1990 in Galveston, Texas) is an American football player. After playing football in college, he was drafted in the 2014 NFL Draft to join the St. Louis Rams. Sam has also been named one of GQ magazine’s Men of the Year. He debuted as a pro in a pre-season game in August 2014, but Sam was released before the beginning of the regular season. Now, he’s participating in another type of season: Sam is currently competing on season 20 of Dancing With The Stars with partner Peta Murgatroyd.

Sam has seven siblings, and he is the first member of his family to attend college. Sam attended the University of Missouri, where he began working seriously on a football career. Once finished with college, Sam came out publicly as gay, making him the first openly LGBT player to be drafted in the NFL. In January 2015, Sam and his boyfriend, Vito Cammisano, got engaged.
