If there’s anyone to boo in this tournament, it might be Russia. The Russians advanced over the young hunks of team North America after they laid the smackdown on Finland, 3-0. Despite Russia and team North America both ending the Group Stage with the same record (and NA pulling off a stunning victory over the near-invincible Sweden) the rules said the Russians won the tie-breaker.
Perhaps that’s for the best? After all, hockey fans are about to see the latest chapter in the rivalry between two of the most successful countries in the sport. Canada’s captain Sidney Crosby will go head-to-head with Russia’s Alex Ovechkin in what will be a rematch of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Sidney and the Pittsburgh Penguins bested Alex’s Washington Capitals, per CBC Sports, and ultimately won the cup.
This is also a fitting because it was Canada and Russia that started this whole World Cup of Hockey thing. Canada faced the then-Soviet Union in the 1972 Summit Series, per the WCH’s official site. This would begat the Canada Cup and once the Canada Cup was retired, the World Cup of Hockey was born. “This is one of the greatest rivalries ever,” Vladimir Tarasenko, 24, said.
However, Canada could likely breeze by the Russians. They outscored everyone in their group (Team Europe, USA, and the Czech Republic) by a combined score of 14-3. Add in that Russia lost 6-1 to Canada at the 2015 World Championship, this might just be another example of the Canucks claiming hockey as their own.
Who do you think will win this match, HollywoodLifers? Do you think Canada will conquer their rivals or are you rooting for Russia to Win?
