Cody Simpson, 23, is a man of many talents! The singer, who has been in the spotlight following his high-profile split from Miley Cyrus in August, is back in the pool. The Aussie crooner revealed he has qualified for the Olympic Games trials following an arduous few months of swimming training. “I’d love to share this personal milestone and let you in on my current journey as an athlete that I’ve kept relatively low key until now,” he wrote on Instagram on December 12.
Cody grew up swimming on Australia’s Gold Coast, and will now have the chance to compete for a spot on the Australian team in the butterfly stroke. He continued, “I have had the chance to experience so much as a musician from touring in arenas around the world, releasing top 10 albums, playing a leading man on Broadway, publishing a work of poetry, travelling with and speaking at the United Nations on environmental and oceanic matters and much more.” Cody went on to say he had achieved a “personal milestone” after focusing on singing for nearly a decade.
“For years I had been fueled by the silent fire in my stomach of returning to my first love, the sport of swimming, with the idea that 2020 would be my year to have a crack at training again,” he continued. “After only 5 months back in the water training with my incredible coach, I was able to take out a win and secure a spot at next years Australian Olympic trials in the 100 fly.” His mom Angie commented, “So proud of you my boy” while Olympian Michael Phelps wrote. “Lfg!! Congrats mate!!” Fellow Gold medallist Ian Thorpe also commented, “Happy to see you in the pool and enjoying it.”
The news comes four months after Cody’s split from Miley. Despite the break up, the pair have remained on good terms, a source close to the “Midnight Sky” singer EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife in November. “Miley has moved on from their relationship and she’s really focused on her own life and has a very busy career and a full life,” the insider said. “But that’s not to say she doesn’t wish him everything but the best and she has nothing but love for Cody and always will no matter what. They ended things on really good terms and there’s absolutely no bad blood between them whatsoever.”
