NBC sports broadcaster Bob Costas changed gears from sports reporting to politics when he used his halftime segment during Sunday Night Football to advocate for gun control. The controversial speech was in response to Kansas City Chief’s linebacker Jovan Belcher‘s tragic murder-suicide on Dec. 1.

Bob quoted an article by Fox Sports columnist Jason Whitlock, who used to work for the Kansas City Star, which pointed out the problem of gun control, and how tougher regulations could have prevented his and girlfriend Kassandra Perkins’ death.

“In the coming days, Jovan Belcher’s actions and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows? But here, wrote Jason Whitlock, is what I believe,” said, and then quoted the article, “if Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.”

His political statement for gun control angered fans, who thought he was expressing his personal political beliefs on a program that is meant for sports and entertainment.

“The Media Left at Halftime: Bob Costas pushing gun control, quoting…who else?..a sports writer on ridding the country of the 2nd Amendment,” tweeted television host Lou Dobbs.
