Buying Guide: Tarot Cards
Things to Consider Before Purchasing Tarot Cards
Number of cards
There are several sizes of tarot decks to choose from.
- 78 cards
Most tarot sets have 78 cards. This includes the 22 major arcana cards, which represent the fool's journey and different phases of life. It also includes four suits similar to hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs. This section of the cards is known as the minor arcana. These are represented by cups, swords, pentacles, and wands.
Each suit represents a certain aspect of the psyche including love and relationships, logical thought, money, and creativity. This is a largely reduced summary, and as you learn more about the tarot, you will see how much more detail each card can represent.
- 80 cards
Sometimes there are 80 tarot cards in a deck. This is because when the 78 cards are printed, they will leave some leftover material, depending on the printing method. Some prefer to use all of the printing material. The two extra cards meanings depend on the creator’s preference. However, as with any deck, it is you who applies the meaning to the cards.
- 22 cards
Alternatively, you may wish to purchase a deck with only the major arcana cards. A set this size is rarer. However, some tarot readers choose this size deck to compliment already existing decks. You can do tarot reading with this amount of cards alone. However, it will not provide as much information or depth as a larger deck.
- 44 cards
Similarly, you may want to purchase the minor arcana as an additional deck.
Are you purchasing your first deck?
Traditionally, a pack of tarot cards is bought as a gift but in this day and age, we believe in buying yourself a gift from time to time. If this is your first deck, we recommend purchasing a full deck of 78 cards. When purchasing a second or third deck, you can consider buying a smaller deck.
If someone asks a question or thinks about a certain situation, that is classed as one reading. If they use the same deck to ask about another situation, immediately after the first reading, they may choose cards that are more relevant to the first reading. Some tarot readers have more than one deck to prevent this energy crossover. Many choose a secondary full deck, but some choose to have an additional major arcana set instead.
Style
If you have a favorite artist, you can look for a tarot deck inspired by their art. We found a beautiful deck including replicas of some of Gustav Klimt's finest work. You may prefer something more traditional. Similarly, you may want cards with metallic tones, vibrant colors, or subdued colors.
Some simplistic styles may hinder your ability to remember their meaning. For example, a card with two pentacles may be too similar an image to differentiate between a card with three pentacles. To remember the card's meaning, it is always easier to come up with a story. Detailed pictures with larger differences will help you achieve this.
Theme
Many people who are attracted to tarot love the gothic style, and there are many gothic-themed tarot decks out there. Similarly, we have also seen many pagan designs. The most common pack we have come across is a Greek mythology-themed set, which shows many gods, goddesses, and heroes.
Information book
Your decks should come with a detailed book on what each card means. Look for a set that includes information about different layouts you can use when doing a reading. The book should be informative, but also a pleasure to read.
Some books included with tarot, include a story, which may better help you understand the psyche of the character the cards portray. This may help you remember what the card means more easily. It is alright to have your book with you when you are learning, but ideally, you should aim to remember the card's meaning without it.
Customer reviews
We recommend reading customer reviews before you purchase a tarot deck to get a good idea about the card's quality. The card should be strong, and durable, with a suitable protective coating. The cards will be handled by many hands if you want to get good at reading.
Tarot Cards Price Range
A tarot card deck can cost between $10 and $60 depending on the materials used, and if they are a limited edition set.
