The trailer for the new film Weird: The Al Yankovic Story has fans wondering what exactly went down between stars Weird Al Yankovic and Madonna. While the film explores the Hollywood rise of the California native (real name Alfred Matthew Yankovic) with his parodies of popular songs, it also spends quite a lot of time with Al, played with great gusto by Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe, and his relationship with the Material Girl, who is played with the same level of gusto by Evan Rachel Wood. The characters even hook up in one scene!

Despite many other major stars playing major parts in Weird Al’s life throughout the film — Rainn Wilson as Dr. Demento, Jack Black as Wolfman Jack, Quinta Brunson as Oprah Winfrey, Conan O’Brien as Andy Warhol and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Al’s doctor — fans appear to be focusing on Al and Madonna, and searching for the truth, as many aspects of the biopic are fantastical for comedy’s sake (see where Weird Al encountering infamous Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar). Let’s take a deep dive to find out everything to know about Weird Al and Madonna’s relationship, below!

Madonna wanted a ‘Yankovic bump’ in the film

The movie addresses the “Yankovic bump,” which is a term used in the music industry to describe the phenomenon of a temporary increase in an artist’s record sales after Weird Al parodies the original song.

In the film, Weird Al paints Madonna as coming on to him in pursuit of the “bump.” During his visit to The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Nov. 1, Weird Al said, “Madonna sort of becomes the ‘villain’ in the movie. She does everything she can to calculatedly get me to do a parody of her new single so she can get that Yankovic Bump.”

Weird Al tweeted about the sexy Madonna scene after trailer dropped

After the trailer dropped for the biopic, followers took to social media to try and decipher if Weird Al and Madonna were every hot and heavy back in the day. The “Eat It” singer caught wind of it and decided to join in the fun on his Twitter, writing, “It amuses me to no end that this is currently the #3 Google search under my name.” Attached to the post were screenshots of the search, including “weird al and madonna.”

He teased ‘nuggets of truth’ about Madonna relationship initially

When Weird Al made an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Nov. 1 and the topic of his and Madonna’s relationship was broached, he began his reply by saying coyly, “Well, there are a few little nuggets of truth sprinkled throughout the biopic.”

Weird Al finally spilled the tea

Although the Desperately Seeking Susan vet has yet to publicly weigh in on the chatter, Weird Al appeared to shut down any rumors of a fling during his promotional tour for the film, after his initial tease.

“It’s obvious that there’s something going on with me and Madonna in the trailer,” Weird Al shared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. “So everyone’s like, ‘Did that really happen? Did Weird Al and Madonna have a thing?'”

He continued, “Our relationship is platonic. The only time I actually met her was in 1985. I talked to her for maybe like 45 seconds backstage. So that’s the extent of the relationship.”

Despite that, Weird Al confirmed, with a laugh, that “[Madonna] is a huge part of the movie!”
