In the trailer for Asteroid City, Jason Schwartzman’s character is stranded in the town with his four children. He calls his father-in-law, played by Tom Hanks, and asks him to pick them up. Jason’s character bonds in Asteroid City with a gorgeous woman played by Scarlett Johansson. His son, played by Jake Ryan, becomes involved in the town’s Junior Stargazer convention. Asteroid City ends up under quarantine after a UFO seemingly arrives.
“I don’t like the way that guy looked at us, the alien,” Jason’s character says to Scarlett’s through a window. “Like we’re doomed.” He also reveals that he’s a widower, setting the stage for a potential new romance. But that might not sit well with Tom Hanks’ character. “In my loneliness, I have learned to give complete and unquestioning math in the people I love,” he says. “I don’t know if that includes you, but it included my daughter and your four children.”
What Is Asteroid City About?
The official synopsis for Asteroid City reads, “The itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention — organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition — is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.”
The romance between Jason Schwartzman and Scarlett Johansson’s characters is definitely going to be a major storyline in the film. Wes Anderson has stayed pretty quiet about what fans can expect from his new movie, which is par for the course for the famous director. But if there’s one thing we do know, it’s that Wes will certainly include his signature movie themes of grief and family drama in Asteroid City.
