Jared developed a weight problem when he was a young man, reportedly wearing pants with a 60-inch waistline. At his heaviest, Jared weighed 425 pounds. When a Subway sandwich shop opened near his apartment building, he started a diet that consisted solely of the chain’s sandwiches. After 700 sandwiches just over a year, Jared lost 245 pounds. Jared was featured in an article in Men’s Health that touted “Stupid Diets…that work!” When word of Jared’s weight loss got out, Subway made him their spokesperson. In 2000, Jared’s story became the focus of a Subway ad campaign. The successful campaign made Jared a household name. Though is presence in their ads had diminished by 2008, Jared remained a part of the company. By 2013, Jared had filmed more than 300 commercials for the franchise. The partnership ended in 2015, when the FBI raided Jared’s Zionsville, Indiana home as part of a child pornography sting. Prior to the raid, Russell Taylor, the director of the Jared Foundation, a non-profit Jared established to raise awareness about childhood obesity, was arrested on child porn charges. Jared and Subway mutually agreed to suspend their relationship during the investigation. Jared would plead guilty to child porn charges and the former spokesperson was charged with soliciting sex from minors.
