Is it 2007 again? Because it sure feels like it! Iconic sister duo Aly & AJ dropped a new and explicit version of “Potential Breakup Song,” and the update is just what we needed in 2020. After the craziness of this year, we need this dose of nostalgia with a little bit of spice. The sisters certainly spiced things up in the last days of 2020.
“Potential Breakup Song” was a huge hit when it was released in 2007. Thirteen years later, the song is more popular than ever. The song had a major resurgence in 2020 on TikTok. Many TikTok users featured the song in their videos. One viral video included a group of moms lip-syncing “Potential Breakup Song” at a bar.
This explicit version is definitely a little edgier than the original version, with curse words added to the lyrics. The sisters sound just as great as they did 13 years ago. If you listened to the song as a teenager and listen to the explicit version now, the song will definitely feel like it’s evolved with you.
Back in Aug. 2020, AJ Michalka admitted that she would like to give the song a “facelift,” and this was before it even went viral on TikTok. “I would love that song to get, like, a facelift,” AJ told Us Weekly “I do like revisiting that song live and playing it for our fans. But I agree. I think the way pop music has changed now, we’d reproduce it and make it kind of a whole other thing.”
The sisters changed their duo name to 78violet in 2009 but returned to their original name in 2015. They’ve released two EPs since then, Ten Years and Sanctuary, and also continued to act in shows like iZombie and Schooled. In addition to the new “Potential Breakup Song,” Aly & AJ have the single “Slow Dancing” out now as well.
