“Is that technically a mullet?” Jimmy Kimmel asked Miley Cyrus when the 28-year-old singer appeared on the Nov. 7 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! “Uh, yes,” added Miley. “All of us had to adjust, a lot of things shutting down, keeping us from doing our kind of standard routines, which one of them was going to get a haircut for me. So, my mom offered – I already had bangs, and my bangs were getting long – and she said, ‘Ah can cut yer hair, but I only know how to do one hairstyle. And I’ve been doing this since 1992 for your dad and your brothers.’”
“And,” continued Miley, “all my mother can do is a mullet.” Yes, the reason why Miley looks like a cross between Amyl and the Sniffers’ Amy Taylor and I Love Rock ‘N Roll-era Joan Jett (who appears on Miley’s new album) isn’t because of some nouveau chic trend. It’s because Miley’s Mom, Tish Cyrus, is the family barber and has been cutting mullets since Billy Ray Cyrus burst on the scene with “Achy Breaky Heart” nearly thirty years ago.
Jimmy, 53, asked Miley if Billy, 59, was flattered that his daughter was aping his “Ape Drape” in her own way. “Yeah,” she said. “I think there’s something genetically where it just kind of grows naturally shorter up top and longer in the back. That’s just kind of a natural shape that our hair grows in. Jimmy suggested that Miley was “born to have a mullet,” to which she succinctly agreed.
During the chat, Miley also brought up how the COVID-19 pandemic has separated the Cyrus clan. “This is the longest I’ve gone without seeing my dad,” said Miley. She also told Jimmy about the special thing she did for Billy on his birthday, August 25. “My dad went a year without eating pizza,” she said. “Keeping purpose in this pandemic has been important for all of us, so my dad thought he would try something he hasn’t done – he would go a year with no pizza. And for his birthday, I actually made him one that was completely ridiculous.” Cut to the custom Miley Cyrus “Hot & Sassy Pizza” box, containing the pizza with “Happy Birthday Dad” written out in pepperoni. Sadly, Miley couldn’t deliver it to her dad, so she’s now stuck with it.
Wait – there’s a twist! Like the “Is It Cake” meme of 2020, this pizza isn’t an actual pizza. “So, my dad was a bit disappointed, but he said it was just a reflection of life, “Miley said of the “giant fake pizza” she got her dad for his birthday. “Because, I got him a pizza after a year of not having pizza, but it wasn’t real because my priorities [were] being able to keep it and, y’know, it could be more of something he could remember me by every time he would walk by an oversized ridiculous fake pizza. I guess he could be disappointed, as he probably was for many years in my stages of evolution of me.”
