The MTV VMAs certainly started with a bang! Nicki, along with Ariana Grande and Jessie J, kicked off the show with a hot performance of their hit collaboration 'Bang Bang,' but things took an awkward turn when Nicki suffered a super weird wardrobe malfunction! Nicki Minaj, 31, definitely knows how to put on a show, but her joint performance with Ariana Grande, 21, and Jessie J, 26, at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 24 was just plain strange! Nicki spent the entire time awkwardly clinging to her dress, covering up both her cleavage and her crotch. What gives?!

Nicki didn’t miss a beat when it came to spitting her rhymes during her “Bang Bang” performance — but her wardrobe was a whole different story!

Nicki is no stranger to showing off some skin (obviously — we’ve all seen her booty-baring Anaconda cover) but instead of flaunting her famous figure during her VMAs “Bang Bang” performance with Ariana and Jessie J, the rapper was desperately trying to cover up her goodies!

Nicki was clutching the crotch and cleavage portion of her little black dress for what seemed like forever, and we actually thought for a moment that she might rip it off entirely. No such luck — instead, Nicki left fans wondering what in the world went wrong with her performance ensemble. What a mess!

At least the focus wasn’t totally on her — Ariana and Jessie J both looked and sounded great!

VMAs showrunners didn’t waste any time bringing out the big guns for one of music’s hottest nights. But don’t worry — there are plenty more show-stopping performances in store for us tonight!

Beyonce, 32, Taylor Swift, 24, Usher, 35, 5 Seconds of Summer and Maroon 5 are all performing at the show — it’s going to be an awesome night!
