Buying Guide to Help You Find the Perfect White Dress
Things to Consider When Choosing a White Dress
Body shape
When choosing the perfect white dress, you’ll want to draw attention away from the parts of your body you are uncomfortable with and highlight the parts you love.
- Pear shape: Pear shapes typically have wider hips than shoulders and large bottoms. Pear shapes also often have a slim waist. To create the illusion of an hourglass figure, you can purchase a dress with shoulder pads or shoulder ruffles. A dress that is fitted at the top and flares out at the bottom will create the illusion that you are as slim on your top half as you are on your bottom half. This style is called fit and flare. Other dresses that suit your figure are maxi dresses, A-line dresses, and shift dresses. If you want to accentuate your bottom half to look larger, choose a mermaid dress. Trumpet skirts and structured pleats also add more volume. Avoid dresses that are loose around the bust, as this will not be flattering to your body shape.
- Hourglass shape: Hourglass shapes measure about the same around the bust and hips and go in at the waist. Hourglass figures are often considered to be curvy. Those with hourglass figures usually have the same body length as their leg length and full hips and thighs. Choose dresses that are figure-hugging and come in at the waist. A dress with a waist belt will flatter your figure. Wrap dresses also bring the waist in to accentuate your curves easily. Finally, a mermaid dress will accentuate the curves on your bottom half. Avoid any loose-fitting dresses. Alternatively, buy a loose-fitting dress and add a waist belt.
- Apple shape: Apple body shapes hold their weight mostly on their top half, with larger bellies and busts than bums and hips. If you have an apple-shaped body, choose a dress with a loose and flowy or fuller skirt than the top half. This will make your body look more balanced. Similarly, v necklines will make your top half look more stream-lined and more in proportion with your bottom half. Look for midi dresses, flowy tunics, and A-line dresses. Avoid dresses that have added fabric around the waist, like peplum dresses. Also, avoid dresses that are tight-fitting or too bulky. Many people with apple-shaped bodies love their legs, so try a dress with a side split or one that sits just above the knee.
- Athletic shape: Those with athletic body shapes have small curves and a waist that doesn’t go in much compared to the hips and breasts. Athletically shaped body types are usually tall and slender. This body shape suits dresses that have a sweetheart or round neckline. Off-the-shoulder dresses will make your shoulders appear wider and will, in turn, make your waist look smaller. This will give more of an illusion of curves and make your body look more like an hourglass shape. Extra material, ruffles, embellishments, and swirls add volume to your body to give it some shape. Look for asymmetrical necklines, wrap dresses, and halter neck dresses to compliment your figure.
Size
Ensure you buy the right sized dress. Different manufacturers might run their sizes slightly larger or smaller than what you are used to. Try the dress on before you buy, or purchase a dress online with enough time to return it before whatever event you are buying it for.
If you are buying your dress online, measure yourself with a tape measure and use the recommended size chart for that product. For example, you may be larger in the breast than you are in the hips and vice versa. If this is the case, choose the larger size option or buy a dress made from a stretchy material and buy the smaller option.
Quality
Ensure the dress isn’t too transparent. This can be a common issue with a white dress. Look for any loose thread and ensure the dress isn’t damaged in any way before you buy it.
Customer reviews
Once you have chosen a dress you want to buy, look at the customer reviews for it. With so many products on the market, the dress you choose should have a majority of positive reviews. Customer reviews will let you know not only of any recurring issues with the product but how well the company resolves any issues.
