Awards season is in full swing, and that means the main event is just around the corner. The path to the Academy Awards narrowed on Jan. 24, 2023, when the nominees for the 95th annual event were officially announced.

Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams presented the honors during an early AM ceremony in Los Angeles. Though they had to take the stage at 5:30 am local time to share the news, both stars still shined. The M3GAN actress looked lovely in a wine-red dress with a cape and a bow. Riz, meanwhile, went with a khaki suit and black shirt.

The awards slate was full of excitement this year. Sci-fi adventure Everything Everywhere All At Once came out on top with 11 nods while the drama Banshees on Inisherin and the historical war drama All Quiet On The Western Front strayed behind with nine a piece. There were many surprises in the acting categories, which are all full of first-timers.

The Oscars will take place March 12, 2023 at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theater. For more of the top nominees and what to expect, check out our gallery here.

Ke Huy Quan

Old Favorite

Ke Huy Quan was just a kid when he was a star in the 80s, as Shortround in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) and Data in The Goonies (1985). After a long time out of the spotlight, he returned to acting in 2021 and received critical acclaim as the husband in Everything Everywhere All At Once. This is his first Oscar nomination.

The star is already a frontrunner, having won the Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture award at the 80th annual Golden Globe Awards on January 10, 2023, photographed with his award here. During his thank you speech, he had the opportunity to thank The Fabelmans‘ director Steven Spielberg for giving him his first role.

“I was raised to never forget where I came from and to always remember who gave me my first opportunity,” he told the audience. “I am so happy to see Steven Spielberg here tonight – Steven, thank you!” The beaming director blew the star a kiss back.

The Music Makers

The music categories are a mixed bag this season. Though A-listers like Rihanna and one-time winner Lady Gaga are both competing for Best Original Song, there is endless buzz around the song “Naatu Naatu,” from the Indian-language action drama RRR. The song went ultra-viral after winning at the Globes.

Sadly, some chart-toppers missed the mark. Taylor Swift was hoping for an Oscar nod, but wasn’t recognized for the track “Carolina” from Where the Crawdads Sing.

2022’s Top Contender

Earning the most nominations is not always a key to success. In 2022, Jane Campion’s The Power Of The Dog was the Oscar frontrunner with 12 nominations. The film CODA would take home the most 2022 trophies, including Best Picture. Jane still made history, as the third female auteur to win Best Director in Oscar history.

Host With The Most

Jimmy Kimmel will be back on stage for the 2023 Oscars on Mar. 12, marking his third time as with the gig. Remarking on the role back in Nov. 2022, the late-night host joked with Variety. He said, “Being invited to host the Oscars for a third time is either a great honor or a trap. Either way, I am grateful to the Academy for asking me so quickly after everyone good said no.”
