Martin Shkreli, born on March 17, 1983 in New York (and also known as “Pharma Bro”), is an American former hedge fund manager; co-founder of the hedge funds Elea Capital, MSMB Capital Management, and MSMB Healthcare; co-founder and former CEO of the pharmaceutical firms Retrophin and Turing Pharmaceuticals (now Vyera Pharmaceuticals); and former CEO of start-up software company Gödel Systems. He is the son to Albanian and Croatian immigrants, who worked as janitors. In December 2015, Shkreli was arrested on federal fraud charges after his company hiked the price of a life-saving drug. He was later sentenced to seven years in prison. On December 22, 2020, Elle published a lengthy profile on Christie Smythe — a former court reporter with Bloomberg News — who detailed her relationship with Shkreli, which led to her quitting her job and divorcing her husband.
