The search for the next music superstar will continue with American Idol season 22. The season premiere is just around the corner, and your Idol faves will be back. There will also be some new faces serving as mentors. However, this will mark Katy Perry’s last season as a judge.

In December 2023, ABC released the first promo for American Idol season 22. The judges and host Ryan Seacrest channel The Wizard of Oz. “Somewhere over the rainbow the next #AmericanIdol will be found!” the caption read. “Join us on the Golden Ticket road Feb 18 on ABC and stream on Hulu.”

During the February 12 edition of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Katy revealed that season 22 will be her last season as a judge. “I think this will probably be my last show, my last season for Idol,” Katy said. “I mean, I love Idol so much. It’s connected with me like the heart of America. But I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse, that pulse to my own beat.”

The singer hinted that she’s working on new music and will be performing at the Rock in Rio festival in Brazil later this year. Luke and Lionel are aware of her impending exit. “They figure I’ve been in the studio for a while so they figured something is coming. I love the show so much but I wanna go and see the world and maybe bring new music,” she noted.

Ryan will be pulling double duty when it comes to hosting. He’ll be replacing Pat Sajak as the host of Wheel of Fortune beginning in 2024. When Ryan was announced as the new Wheel of Fortune host in June 2023, he released a statement on his Instagram. A fan commented, “Name something this man can’t do. Are you going to continue to host American Idol too?” Ryan later replied, “Yes! And thank you.”

Things really kicked off with the First 700 event, where hopefuls signed up to grab a VIP spot before anyone else. Contenders were also able to audition under their genre for the first time in Idol Across America history. Auditions were open worldwide to all those eligible.

Following the First 700 event, Idol Across America auditions got underway in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. There was an open call on September 8.
