Britney Spears‘ father, Jamie Spears, is speaking out for the first time since she requested to have him removed as her conservator. Jamie, 68, claimed in an interview with CNN that he was on “good terms” with his daughter until August, when the singer‘s attorney filed to officially end his involvement with the conservatorship. Jamie and Britney allegedly haven’t spoken in the four months since the petition was filed.

“I love my daughter and I miss her very much,” Jamie told CNN. “When a family member needs special care and protection, families need to step up, as I have done for the last 12-plus years, to safeguard, protect and continue to love Britney unconditionally. I have and will continue to provide unwavering love and fierce protection against those with self-serving interests and those who seek to harm her or my family.”

The situation began when Britney’s attorney Samuel D. Ingham III, stated in his filing that the “Toxic” singer was afraid of her father, who has controlled her $60 million estate since her public breakdown in 2008 (co-sonservator Andrew Wallet stepped down in March 2019) He further alleged that Jamie made business decisions without Britney’s knowledge, and according to court documents, stated that Britney would not perform until her father was removed from the conservatorship.

The singer ended her Las Vegas residency in January 2019, citing her father’s health issues. Jamie was temporarily removed from the conservatorship that September due to an alleged altercation with Britney’s 15-year-old son, Sean Preston Federline; he has since been cleared of any wrongdoing. Britney’s care manager, Jodi Montgomery, is currently her conservator, and the “Circus” singer has asked that she permanently take over.

After losing the August plea, Britney returned to court in November 2020 and begged a judge to remove her father as her conservator, again. Jamie’s lawyer, Vivian Lee Thoreen told CNN that Britney’s attorney is trying to prevent the singer and her father from communicating. “Jamie’s relationship with Britney is not that different than your average father-daughter relationship insofar as there has always been a mutual love and respect for each other,” Thoreen said.
