Randy Budd, 55, was found dead in his Uniontown, Ohio, home on Aug. 6. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, chief investigator for the Stark County Coroner’s Office, Harry Campbell, told PEOPLE. Randy killed himself after calling his brother several times and texting many members of his family to tell them he loved them, Campbell said. Randy and his wife Sharon Budd, 54, were the only ones in the house at the time of his death. This is so tragic, as Sharon has brain damage from an accident which occurred two years ago, and that is the assumed reason why Randy killed himself.

Sharon was injured in July 2014, when she and Randy were driving with their daughter Kaylee, 21, to New York to see a Broadway play when a boulder smashed through the window of their Nissan Rogue. Sharon — a breast cancer survivor and retired middle school language arts teacher — was hit in the head, suffering permanent brain damage, a crushed skull and the loss of her right eye. How horrific! Sadly, after that, Sharon could no longer perform everyday tasks, like showering and dressing herself.

Before he committed suicide, Randy also sent a message to Pennsylvania state Sen. Gene Yaw asking him to “please” pass legislation that would require fencing on highway overpasses, according to PennLive. “Randy Budd did not die from a gunshot. He died when those kids threw a rock through his windshield,” Union County District Attorney D. Peter Johnson said. He believed that Randy was a victim of the teenagers who injured Sharon, according to PennLive. What a tragic thought.

“The Budd family are all together and are grieving the loss of their dad, husband and brother,” the family said in a statement. “We deeply appreciate the tremendous support our family has received from the Massillon, Canton and Hartville areas over the past several years. We ask for your prayers and some privacy as we deal with our loss.” What a devastating time for the family.
