Anton was loved by a lot of people (if the outpouring of grief on social media isn’t proof enough) and the actor’s close friends wanted to check in on him when he never showed up for rehearsal earlier in the night. The group went over to his home around 1:00am just to make sure things were okay with the actor, and discovered a gruesome sight; Anton had somehow become pinned between his car and the brick mailbox at the bottom of his driveway, and was dead.

We can’t imagine the shock and terror that Anton’s friends experienced at that moment. The driveway is apparently at a very steep incline, and Anton’s car was still running and in neutral, according to law enforcement officials who spoke to TMZ. It’s unclear how the freak accident happened, or why Anton was even out of the car while it was running. Police don’t expect any foul play in the tragic death.

It’s also unclear what Anton was supposed to be rehearsing that fateful night. Star Trek Beyond, in which Anton reprised his famous role of Chekov, is in post production and due to hit theaters on July 22.
