Ty described the painful last day of Brittany’s life, which she spent at her family’s home in Delaware. Reclined in a hospital bed in the living room, surrounded by her supportive parents and sisters, and beloved fiancé Tony, she said what would be her last words.

“I will never forget, [Brittany] sat up and she hugged Tony really, really tight ,and she looked at Cathy and said, ‘I love you guys,'” her father told PEOPLE. She would die just moments after that beautiful, loving statement. This is heartbreaking. We cannot imagine what her family, and Tony, are going through.

Tony told PEOPLE that the day Brittany died “was really no different [than any other day], until later that evening.” She breathing became labored, but nobody expected her to pass quite so soon; it was only two months since her ovarian cancer diagnosis, and the disease was spreading remarkably fast. She was in a great deal of pain, but fighting through it.

“What I remember most about the last several hours is our family was together,” her mom, Cathy, told the mag. “Britt was surrounded by family. There was no doubt, no question that Britt knew how much all of us loved her… as complete as you can be with something as tragic as this. We were there for Brittany, we were there for each other, and there was this kind of love in our living room that night.”
