Louis Tomlinson: One Direction Responds To Shocking Smoking Video

After a shocking video of Louis and his 1D bandmate Zayn Malik smoking what they called a 'joint' leaked on May 27, the group has spoken out and jumped into the first stages of damage control. With Directioners burning their concert tickets in protest, did the singers have an explanation for the startling video? The usually innocent boys of One Direction are deep in the midst of a controversy after a video of Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik lighting a roll-up cigarette and making jokes about "joints" and "illegal substances" leaked onto the internet on May 27. With fans up in arms, and with the singers' reputations in jeopardy, it didn't take the boy band long to respond to the scandal.

One Direction: How Did They Respond To Smoking Video?

However, the initial response may not be what Directioners were hoping for. Instead of Louis or Zayn personally addressing the video, a representative for One Direction gave a statement in response. And not only that, but the statement did not include any explanation, or even any semblance of an apology.

Plain and simple: 1D is looking to take down whoever released the footage. “The matter is in the hands of our lawyers,” the rep told HollywoodLife.com.

The video appears to have been filmed by Louis himself, so the statement’s implication is that Louis’ personal property was possibly stolen or hacked by someone else and then leaked to Mail Online. Louis and Zayn may also be in a bit of a legal gray area, as possession of marijuana for personal consumption is not illegal in Peru, where the video was taken.

Louis Tomlinson & Zayn Malik Caught Smoking ‘Joint’

It isn’t hard to see why the video would be so coveted, and why One Direction is so furious that it got out. The footage shows Louis and Zayn in the back of a car, lighting up and smoking the funny-looking cigarette while making thinly-veiled references to marijuana. Filming Zayn in a Bob Marley t-shirt, Louis says, “So here we are, leaving Peru. Joint lit. Happy days!” and later cracks, “One very very important factor of Zayn’s warm up of course is Mary J herself,” while Zayn blows smoke into the camera.

Obviously, fans have already reacted strongly, tweeting how “worried” they are about their idols while some have shown their anger in compelling ways, such as burning their tickets to future One Direction concerts. So it’s imperative that Louis, Zayn, and the rest of the band take control of this situation before it gets out of hand. Unfortunately, only focusing on the person who leaked the video isn’t going to be enough.
