Casey told her friend and neighbor Brittany Scheiber she didn’t realize she was pregnant until she was seven months along and that the conception”was just a random one night thing,” according to police interview records.
She met ex-fiance Jesse Grund shortly after she got pregnant, but still led him to believe he could have been the dad. In 2009, Grund revealed he knew the timing meant he was unlikely to be Caylee’s father, but he still assumed the role.
“For the first year or two of her life, I was dad,” he told People magazine. “I was the father figure in her life, and I loved her more than anything. She was an amazing little baby. I had never been a father before.”
He was devastated when he was DNA tested, along with Casey’s dad George and brother Lee — who she claimed had molested her — and all three were ruled out.
Casey is on trial for the first degree murder of the 2-year-old, whose body was found dumped in woodland in December 2008, six months after she went missing.
If found guilty, Casey faces a possible death sentence.
