“It was like oh my god, I have known you for this long and I’m falling in love with every little thing that you do,” Colbie gushed of her new boyfriend!
Grammy winner Colbie Caillat has a boyfriend — but it’s not who you would guess! Sorry, Jason Mraz, but Colbie has “fallen for” her best friend and guitarist, Justin Kawika Young. “I didn’t know what it was like to be in love with your best friend,” Colbie dished to HollywoodLife.com exclusively May 23 at VH1’s Save The Music Summer Kick-Off at the W in Hoboken, N.J. “But now I know. So when I sing [“Falling For You”], I’m like oh my god, I’m relating to my own song finally!”
Colbie couldn’t help but talk about Justin the majority of the time, though she refused to give us his name (we figured out who her bf was when the two sang on stage together): “He’s a musician. We don’t talk about it, but it’s not a secret really,” she said.
But she did explain how they fell in love: “There was this guy, this musician friend of mine and I was just friends with him. I didn’t think I liked him really,” she said. “Then I was like, ‘maybe this could work, I’m kind of falling for him.'”
And, since they spend so much time traveling and performing together, it made things easier. “It was more just like finding out more about the person,” she said. “It was like oh my oh my God, I have known you for this long and I’m falling in love with every little thing that you do — how he interacts with people, he’s really healthy mentally and physically, he wants to help the environment and he wants to be a vegetarian — stuff like that. He’s just a beautiful person.”
“Most of [my third album] is about him,” she told us. “I have like 15 songs — they’re all pretty much about him — the falling in love stage and anything about him.”
Colbie said the song “Just For Me” by Al Green reminds her of Justin. “It’s the song that’s his ring tone when he calls,” she admitted. “He bought the album and that was the one song that every time we listen, I wanted to put it on repeat when we’d hang out.”
It’s sweet to hear that Colbie has found Mr. Right, but for her girlfriends she still remains the go-to girl for relationship advice (she even has a song on her new album titled “Shadow” that is about a guy giving her BFF the “run around.”) “Just know what you want out of a relationship,” Colbie advised. “Sometimes people forget and they try to reach for a person who maybe you’re not right for them. If it’s not right, just let him go. There’s someone better out there.”
We’re were super excited to learn that Colbie’s secret man was Justin — it was obvious when they couldn’t stop staring into each others’ eyes on stage yesterday. So now that they’re an item, maybe they can even form a trio with Justin Bieber. “He has a good voice, so I would like to sing with him,” Colbie said.
