Tom Bergeron is an American television personality best known for hosting two of the biggest competition shows on TV: Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) and America’s Funniest Home Videos (AFV). He took over as DWTS host in its very first season in 2005 and remained for 15 seasons until 2020, when the network announced in July that they were “moving in a new creative direction.”
Prior to DWTS, Bergeron hosted Hollywood Squares from 1998-2004, and became host of AFV in 2001 — announcing his departure from AFV in 2014, with his final episode airing in 2015. He also served as host of the Emmy Awards in 2008 and was a contestant on The Masked Singer in 2020.
In 2025, Bergeron made a surprising return to the ballroom: he agreed to appear as a guest judge on DWTS’s 20th-anniversary episode set for November 11. He cited the show’s original show-runner Conrad Green — who has since returned — as the key reason for his comeback. He explained, “It was really because Conrad’s there … I couldn’t be happier that the people who are running the show now are running the show.” He also made a splashy return to primetime hosting with a very unconventional new gig: he’s the host of Dancing with Sharks, a brand-new underwater dance-competition special for Shark Week. The program, which premiered July 20 on the Discovery Channel, features expert divers performing choreographed routines with sharks.
