That’s what Alanis is so much about, her mantra is reach out, communicate, speak, relational healing. That’s the way we can heal as human beings, to reach out, share your deepest, darkest fear, and that’s the way we grow and learn as human beings. I love the fact that we’re headed toward ‘You Learn.'” January 14, 2020, 2:36PM 3 of 6 On Singing ‘So Unsexy’ & ‘Mary Jane’ Elissa Anderson “The script was really incredible to begin with, but I was really reticent. I thought, ‘Oh, a jukebox musical. I love this music. I don’t want anybody to ruin it.’ but I was like 10 pages in and I just thought, ‘Wow, this is really good.’ And crazily enough, my two favorite songs of Alanis’s have always been ‘Mary Jane’ and ‘So Unsexy.’ So when I saw that first song Steve sang is So Unsexy, I was like ‘I love that song.’ And then I got through the end. By the time I got to the end, I was like, I mean, he sings ‘Mary Jane’ oh crap, now I want this, which means I’m not going to get it!'” January 14, 2020, 2:36PM 4 of 6 On Tackling Issues Like Addiction & Rape In ‘Jagged Little Pill’ Elissa Anderson “I feel like I am a part of something that is much bigger than all of us and I love the fact that we’re bringing the issues that we’re dealing with to light in such a cool, creative, artistic way. It’s very exciting.” January 14, 2020, 2:36PM 5 of 6 On How Steve Handles MJ’s Battle With Addiction Elissa Anderson “We sort of clocked the moments throughout all Act One where when the doctor asked me at the end, “Have you noticed any signs of erratic behavior?” That it’s like a film in my mind where I just go boom, flash, flash, flash, flash and I see all of the crazy things that I should have seen. I think that’s why it’s so heartbreaking for him in that moment is … and the thing is, it is unfortunately a true story for so many people. That’s one of the greatest sort of tragedies of addiction is that it starts out as just erratic behavior.” January 14, 2020, 2:36PM 6 of 6 On The Sexual Assault Storyline In ‘JLP’ Elissa Anderson “I said often throughout rehearsals, that I was very interested, as a man involved in this story, in finding a way we can show how men can be a part of the solution. I think that’s what they’ve done in a very subtle way with Nick and Steve. Steve is ultimately stepping up to lead by example and Nick is in crisis mode and then realizes he’s made a horrible mistake and does the right thing. So that was my greatest want with it — I just didn’t want all the guys to be the bad guys, because ultimately with this kind of change that our culture needs desparately, everyone has to be a part of the solution.” January 14, 2020, 2:36PM Click to Subscribe to Get Our Free HollywoodLife Daily Newsletter to get the hottest celeb news.
