Sarah McLachlan is a Canadian singer, songwriter and humanitarian, who was born on January 28, 1968 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. She was adopted. Sarah can play numerous musical instruments including, ukulele, piano, harp, keyboard and guitar. Sarah, who was offered a record deal at age 17, studied classical guitar and piano and voice at the Maritime Conservatory of Music. She is known for her pop/rock sound and her emotional ballads. Sarah released her first album of original music titled ‘Shine On’ on May 6, 2014. She’s sold over 30 million albums worldwide and her best-selling album is ‘Surfacing’ (1997), for which she won two Grammy Awards (out of four nominations) and four Juno Awards. In 2012 she was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame. Sarah has two daughters — India Ann Sushil Sood and Taja Summer Sood from her previous marriage to her drummer, Ashwin Soon. They married in 1997 and divorced in 2008. She’s also a humanitarian. Sarah funds an outreach program in Vancouver that provides music education for inner city children, which later developed into the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, a free music school for at-risk youth, in 2011.
