Queen Cleopatra — ‘Queen Cleopatra’ is a Netflix docuseries premiering May 10. Jada Pinkett Smith is the executive producer on the project, which is about Egyptian queen Cleopatra. In the show, Cleopatra is played by British actress Adele James. Netflix’s decision to cast Adele, who is half Black, as Cleopatra has sparked major controversy. An Egyptian lawyer even filed a lawsuit against Netflix. However, the director of ‘Queen Cleopatra’ has spoken out in defense of the decision to cast Adele in the titular role.

In a statement about the series, Jada said, “Cleopatra is a queen who many know about, but not in her truth. This season will dive deeper into her history and re-assesses this fascinating part of her story.” You can see photos of Adele as Cleopatra in the show, and more, in our gallery.
