Pete Buttigieg at the South Bend Farmer’s Market — Pete Buttigieg is the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate. Buttigieg is openly gay, and has been married to his schoolteacher husband Chasten Buttigieg since 2018. Should he win the party nomination after the primaries, he would become the first openly gay candidate to represent a major political party. If he wins the 2020 general election against President Donald Trump, he would be the first openly gay president in American history. Another first? He would be the youngest president in American history, turning 39 years old right before inauguration day in 2021. Buttigieg is a former Navy intelligence officer who served in Afghanistan, a Rhodes scholar, and the speaker of six languages.
